Lincoln High School Tri Team
BTC's 2008
Outreach Project is supporting the Abraham Lincoln High School Triathlon
Team. The team draws from students in the Coney Island section of
Brooklyn – an ethnically and economically diverse neighborhood. The 20
athletes on the team receive an introduction to triathlon, though many
come to the class without bikes or running shoes. BTC's goal is to
assist the team in acquiring bicycles, shoes, and other training gear,
in addition to funds for race entry.
Team coach (and physical
education teacher) Helene Roth worked very hard last year to assemble
what she could for her students in the form of used bicycles and donated
race t-shirts, since the school cannot devote any budget towards the
team's product needs. This year Brooklyn Tri will provide support in the
form of labor (teaching kids how to change a tire, helping youths get to
races) and, hopefully, monetary support. The students need everything
from bicycles to athletic gear to running shoes, including such
essentials as bicycle tubes, tires, lights, and helmets. Donations
are tax deductible!
